One of Bamenda’s popular hotels located at Cow Street Monday June 5,went up in flames. The fire bursted out in the building at about 3:00pm Cameroon time . Thick, grey smoke could be seen billowing from the first floor of the 3-storey Top Star Hotel located at the intersection between Cow Street and Total Nkwen.

When the Cameroon Journal visited the scene, firefighters could be seen trying frantically to put out the angry flames which were consuming chairs, beds and other furniture inside the building.

Though they were being helped by police anti-riot vehicles, the flames were very stubborn and took over an hour to contain.

The cause of the fire is not actually known but the Cameroon Journal could confirm that the doors of the hotel were locked and there were no customers lodging in the building when the fire broke out.

“The hotel was locked in respect of today’s ghost town” one onlooker told our reporter at the scene as the flames rose into the sky with thick fumes of smoke.

In another development yet to be confirmed, some unidentified persons were said to have sneaked into the premises of GBHS Bamenda where it is alleged that some students were taking the GCE. The men of the underworld are said to have stealthily grabbed some three students and chopped off their hands for violating injunction against GCE writing and showing up to take the exams.

Photos circulating on social media allegedly from the Bamenda Regional Hospital where it is said the three students were moved to for urgent treatment, showed doctors attending to some severely injured victims with hands severely lacerated.

The Cameroon Journal at press time wasn’t able to confirm the authenticity of the story since Bamenda hospital has no major telephone line. We will follow up the story and bring you developments as they unfold.
